– Aerostatic tool spindle with integrated BLDC motor and automatic collet tool direct clamping system –

U/ASD-Cx (front view)

About our “ASD-Cx/ UASD-Cx” – what to expect
with radially arranged spindle connectors
Speeds up to 100,000 rpm for the production of optical components and for micromachining
Lowest spindle errors (DIN ISO 230-7) for the machining of optical components and dynamic and thermal stability
Also available with high-pressure aerostatic bearing technolgy ( UASD-Cx)
With automatic, pneumatically operated precision collet chuck

Our U/ASD-Cx (x = tool shank diameter) features a self-developped, automatic precision collet system, which enables speeds of up to 100,000 rpm. Combined with an extremely precise tool direct clamping that guarantees tool run-outs of less than 0.5 µm TIR, this spindle ensures outstanding machining quality and highest precision at exceptional dynamic and thermal stability. As the spindle rotation frequency never reaches one of the spindle natural frequencies (=no resonances), our U/ASD-Cx offers robust dynamic stability. With a soak-time of under 3 minutes and a shaft axial growth of under 3 micron, the thermal stability makes a compensation for thermal effects by the machine unnecessary in almost any case.

The spindle combines the ultra-precise characteristics required to generate optical surface finish with the robustness and functionality of modern tool spindles for precision machining. On top of the thermal and dynamic stability you can expect an in-house developed high-resolution rotary encoder, efficient thin-film liquid cooling, a steel housing with a standardized diameter and our well-proven robust bearing system for higher material removal rates thanks to its rigidity and load-bearing capacity. Our ASD-Cx is also available with our hybrid bearing system, which significantly enhances overload and collision safety.

With the U/ASD-Cx, users benefit from its  precision, thermal stability, and the ability to generate optical surfaces in both milling and grinding applications for ultra-precision machining and CNC operations.

Note: By default, our U/ASD-Cx comes equipped with a collet system. Upon customer request, the installed collet can be swapped for one with a different clamping diameter. The following sizes are available: 6 mm, 4 mm, 3 mm, 1/8″, and 1/4″.

New development: ASD-CLT

Applications like contact lens turning require clamping 1/2″ (12.7 mm) fixtures (block pieces). For these applications we have developed a very precise flexible precision collet our ASD-Cx can accomodate.

Based on our proven design, our U/ASD-Cx is now also available for clamping 1/2″ shanks (ASD-CLT), making it suitable for holding workpieces, such as those required for contact lens turning.

The new collet design covers a diameter range of 0.48 – 0.51″ (12.4 – 12.9 13 mm). As a standard our ASD-CLT is capable of speeds of up to 25,000 rpm. Other speeds available upon request.

Comparison High-Pressure Aerostatic Technology

The patented high-pressure aerostatic bearing system of our UASD models is designed to operate with an air supply pressure of 20-30 bar. It provides a load capacity at the spindle nose – verified in customer tests – that is 200% higher than our standard bearings operated at 6 bar.

Note: To operate any high-pressure model ( UASD-x), you may require a different air compressor or an additional pressure booster and – more importantly – an air dryer that provides a dew point of 3°C at the supply pressure (20-30 bar)

Available and well-proven housing options:

Using thermal shrinking, any bespoke housing can be supplied to you by mounting flange units onto the cylindrical standard steel-housing. These flange units can provide tapped bores, axial shoulders or radial guide diameters to mount the spindle into your vertical or horizontal machining setup.

Let us know your design envelope, and we will design and provide the right flange unit for you.
